Finding Art on the World Wide Web

Major art indexes and other sites in alphabetical order.
I'm concentrating here on larger sites that include either comprehensive listings of arts resources or present large collections of images. I'm now including more descriptions here in the interest of being more useful, not in order to rate the resources. Wherever practicable I used a description provided by the resource itself. These links can lead you to a vast and diverse world of art-on-the-web.

artcyclopedia * Artcyclopedia "Our mission is to become the definitive and most effective guide to museum-quality fine art on the Internet." Their Master Museum List will serve as my main excuse for not listing museums here.

Arthby's * Arthby's is an artist's internet services site that includes Art Bridge, a free artists' listing and directory, a newsletter, and more.

Art in Flux * Art in Flux "A Directory of Resources for Research in Contemporary Art. Sites have been selected according to their relevance to the study of national or international contemporary art and artists." Many interesting links collected by Cheryl K. Shurtleff, a professor at Boise State U. Especially useful is her Reference and Methodology page.

Artlex * Artlex "art dictionary for artists, students and educators in art production, criticism, history, aesthetics, and education ... You will find definitions of more than 3,300 terms here, along with thousands of images, pronunciation notes, great quotations, and links to other resources on the Web."

Art Museum Network * Art Museum Network "Official website of the world's leading art museums since 1996. The world's largest and most prestigious art museums have joined forces to provide free access to information about their collections, exhibitions, and services." Includes an image collection, calendar of exhibitions, news listings, and more. * includes many artist and gallery listings, news of exhibitions and auctions, a magazine, and more resources. Very much oriented toward the auction business.

artnetweb * artnetweb "artnetweb is a network of people and projects investigating new media in the practice of art." - New York City based site has many listings and many interesting projects of its own, including installations just for the web, newsletters, virtual courses offered online, and more.

Art on the Net * Art on the Net - "Join fellow artists in sharing works together on the Internet. Enjoy visiting artists studios and roaming the gallery." A friendly place to visit artists and their work.

ArtSource * ArtSource "...a gathering point for networked resources on Art and Architecture. The content is diverse and includes pointers to resources around the net as well as original materials submitted by librarians, artists, and art historians, etc. This site is intended to be selective, rather than comprehensive. " * Artstar.comThis resource has become primarily a linking site. * "The on-line journal for the study and exhibition of the arts of Asia" This lively site has a lot of great resources: Great on-line exhibitions, a forum, etc, etc,.....and don't miss their list of links! This is the way to asian arts.

Christus Rex * Christus Rex Gateway to the Vatican which includes, among many other exhibits, the Musei Vaticani home of many an Italian painting, not to mention the gallerie of tapestries, etc, etc.

CGFA- Carol Gerten-Jackson's Fine Art * CGFA- Carol Gerten-Jackson's Fine Art- A Virtual Art Museum. This vast and constantly growing site has many high quality reproductions of famous and not-so-famous paintings. For faster downloading, you should use the closest of the mirror sites.

dART - * dART - Communal Marketplace for the Arts "dARTTM is an Internet Art Network. It's a cooperative effort of 4,711 websites to help people find and research art." Contains listing services, forums, etc. (formerly Internet for the Fine Arts).

* EURAN's Culture Channel: Stockholm'sEuropean Art Network is developing a site that provides spaces for artists in a growing number of fields to display their work on the Internet.

Find Arts * Find Arts "The purpose of this site is to facilitate the search of artists in the Web. Find Arts provides a form where viewers can do searches by specific and multiple criteria." This project is a free listing service that also includes a bulletin board and more.

Islamic Arts & Architecture Organization * Islamic Arts & Architecture Organization "...a non-profit organization dedicated to providing information on arts and architecture. With a strong commitment to research and service, IAAO strives to offer a Web presentation of the highest quality and to promote the awareness of Islamic arts as a humanistic study, recognizing the inter-relationship between the arts and other academic disciplines."

IslamiCity * Islamic Art & Culture listings from Islamicity, links to other sites for art and architecture, calligraphy, pictures of mosques, etc.

Mark Harden's Artchive * Mark Harden's Artchive (formerly known as the Museum of Art) offers an archive of over 2000 high resolution JPGs, from Michelangelo to Picasso. You can also read selections from classic art criticism, art CD-ROM reviews, and special online exhibitions, including a virtual recreation of the 'First Impressionist Exhibition of 1874' and more.

NeT-ArT * NeT-ArT has evolved into a "a Virtual Community of Artists and Galleries, constantly in contact with the public." This Italian site offers an on-line magazine, forums, chat, listing service for artists, and more.

ArtsWire Current * NYFA Interactive A program of the New York Foundation for the Arts, this site provides services for the arts community including a weekly digest of arts news, listings for artists and organizations.

OCAIW: Orazio Centaro's Art Images on the Web * OCAIW: Orazio Centaro's Art Images on the Web, in English, Italian, and Portuguese, "is a links catalogue of art work images presented in web and is due to make it easier for searching, in web, links related to works, images from the most famous artists in the field of painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. The catalogue presents more than 11,000 links of art work images." Search famous artists of history to find their images on various web-sites.

SIRIS * SIRIS - The Smithsonian Institution Research Information System. Home of the Archives of American Art, among its vast resources for historical research.

SITO * SITO "SITO is a website for individual and collaborative artists. Here you will find art portfolios of hundreds of artists around the world. Also, creates and hosts a number of Internet-based collaborative art projects, including the award-winning Gridcosm and HyGrid."

The Thinker * The Thinker - Site of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Guides to the Museums' events plus a huge and growing, high quality imagebase.

Universes in Universe * Universes in Universe - Worlds of Art, "Information and communication system on the visual arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia/Pacific."

This is the original collection of famous paintings started by Nicholas Pioch way back when... Provides large images and bios of many of the most famous Western artists, and more.
